From and By the FBI
As a company, Kaseware has one primary goal: to create the software we wish we had as investigators and deliver it to organizations around the world. This goal came from the founders of the company, two FBI special agents who designed and built Sentinel, the case management system used by the FBI today. They took the values, experience, and security knowledge learned during their time at the FBI and ensured it was the foundation of the culture at their new company. One of those founders was Nathan Burrows.
A History of Security
Throughout his career, Nathan has built a comprehensive understanding of computer science and security. He attended the University of Kentucky where he earned a degree in Computer Science and started his technology career developing software and protecting digital data. Nathan took that experience into a new career with the FBI and there led multi-agency and international investigations of computer intrusions, fraud, and crimes against children in Indianapolis, San Diego, and Denver. As part of his computer intrusion duties, he joined the Cyber Action Team, a response team designed to respond to the most complicated and extensive computer intrusions.
In 2009, when Nathan was in his sixth year at the FBI, he was approached to work on a large technology project for the Bureau. This project was to transform the Bureau’s case management system from a 1980’s mainframe technology to a modern, web-enabled platform.
Among the team of developers was Kaseware’s other founder Dorian Deligeorges, who along with Nathan became leaders of the project. Working over three years, they not only created a scalable enterprise system, but deployed it to tens of thousands of users worldwide. The FBI still uses it today.
With the experience and knowledge from the Sentinel program, Nathan and Dorian left the FBI to create their own software, one that could be used by investigators of all types, in all industries and all around the world. To do this, they founded Kaseware.

Security At Kaseware
Nathan’s experience responding to computer intrusions at the FBI continually informs the whole team on how to protect the customers and team of Kaseware. “Working in cyber crime, I learned the techniques that nation states and criminals use to break into computer systems. I’ve spent many years protecting data systems from these attacks and finding the solutions to prevent them in the future. I’ve brought the defenses and that experience with me to Kaseware.” Nathan says.
Working between team members and Kaseware’s systems, Nathan has led the creation of a security net across the organization. This allows a space for communication and collaboration among team members while separating and securing information where needed. He also applies a defense-in-depth strategy: when planning, we prepare for one or two of our defenses to fail or be circumvented and ensure we can still stop the attack. Following the saying that “two is one and one is none” ensures information is protected on multiple levels across the organization.
Improving Upon Sentinel
Building off the success of Sentinel, the Kaseware founders sought to exceed the platform they had built for the FBI. Without the time and budgeting restraints that accompanied a large government project, Nathan worked with team members to build an investigative management system that wasn’t just functional, but the system he believed every investigator should have. Over the six years since Kaseware’s founding, many unique features have been added to create a force multiplier for the critical work the platform enables. Among the many features, Nathan believes there are vital improvements to investigations through just these three powerful Kaseware tools:
Automatic deduplication of documents, records, and entries was a feature created to save investigators time. Intuitively recognizing previous entities, the Kaseware platform will fill in fields when something is entered into the database multiple times. Removing the need to enter fields repeatedly can further streamline workflows and allow investigators to focus on the important goal – solving a case.
Link Analysis Software offers a critically important visual of the information within the system. Built on a graph database, all sets of data stored in Kaseware can be connected within seconds, showing degrees of relation between people, places, documents, and more. Exploring the ever important relationships between the different parts of your investigation in one comprehensive chart can facilitate further analysis and discoveries.
Geospatial Mapping Software is an analytical tool that enables users to convert large data sets into geographical maps. A multitude of map overlays reveal valuable insights between live statistics and information previously entered into the system.
